MILWAUKEE — A winter weather advisory is in effect for much of southern Wisconsin through Friday morning as a long-duration snowfall event moves across the region.

Drivers should be prepared for hazardous travel conditions, especially during the evening and Friday morning commutes, warns the National Weather Service.

Snowfall Overview:

  • Timing: Snow will spread east-southeast across the area this morning into the afternoon. Northern areas, particularly north of a Lone Rock to Racine/Kenosha line, will see snowfall rates of 1/4 to 1/2 inch per hour once snow begins, the NWS said.
  • Peak Periods: Most of the area will experience these higher rates by mid to late afternoon, lasting into the evening. A lull in snowfall is possible at times.
  • Overnight Focus: Lake-enhanced snowfall will bring heavier rates near Lake Michigan, with Sheboygan County likely seeing the highest totals through Friday morning.

Expected Snow Totals:

  • Areas north of the Lone Rock to Racine/Kenosha line, and those near Lake Michigan, may receive 3 inches or more of snow.
  • Sheboygan County has the greatest potential for higher amounts due to lake enhancement.

Travel Impacts:

  • Snow-covered and slippery roads are expected across southern Wisconsin.
  • The evening commute today will be affected statewide.
  • The Friday morning commute near Lake Michigan, especially in Sheboygan County, will face significant impacts.
