Suspect Arrested After 19-Year-Old Navy Sailor Killed In WI: Police

Police arrested a man from Milwaukee on Wednesday in connection with the fatal May shooting of a Navy sailor from Arizona, authorities said.

WEST ALLIS, WI —Police arrested a suspect on Wednesday in connection with the May killing of a 19-year-old Navy sailor from Arizona who was visiting Wisconsin when he was shot, according to a news release from the West Allis Police Department.

The suspect is a 36-year-old man from Milwaukee and charges will soon be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney, police said. The sailor was in training at the Great Lakes Naval Station and was visiting his girlfriend in Milwaukee when he was shot, according to a May report by TMJ4.

It was about 2:41 a.m. on May 8 when police were called out to South 84th and Becher Streets. Officers found Phoenix O. Castanon wounded by a gunshot in the roadway, and first responders provided medical care, but he died at the scene, police said.

Castanon's death left his family in Arizona mourning, ABC15 reported, but his parents were not surprised to hear their son was trying to stop someone from harassing a friend, the television station reported.

Daniel Dunklin, Castanon's father, told ABC 15 in May that it was what he was "raised to do."

Police said their initial investigation found Castanon was in the area with some friends when an unknown man in a vehicle approached one of the females in the group, police said. The man started speaking to her and frightened her so she ran to Castanon's car, police said.

Castanon got out of the car, approached the man and exchanged some words, then the man shot Castanon, according to the West Allis Police Department.
