MILWAUKEE, WI — Forecasters said they were confident that a cold front would start snow squalls across Wisconsin, including the Milwaukee area, on Friday afternoon.

A strong cold front will move across southern Wisconsin midday Friday, the National Weather Service said in a statement. Wind gusts up to 35-40 mph were expected throughout the afternoon joined by snow showers.

Squalls can create blinding conditions and minor slick spots that could make driving dangerous, forecasters said. Chances for rain and snow showers are expected at 1 p.m., a daily forecast showed.

It's unlikely Milwaukee will miss out on the squalls, despite the lake effect creating warmer conditions in the deep southeastern parts of the state, forecasters said. Snow showers will ramp in the mid- to late afternoon and continue into the evening.
