WISCONSIN — Two nationwide retailers this week announced plans to accept coupons from Bed Bath & Beyond as the massive home furnishing retailer files for bankruptcy.

Closing sales were expected to begin among Bed Bath & Beyond stores Wednesday, with coupons no longer being accepted at that point, the company said.

The bankrupt retailer has stores in Greendale, Madison, Kenosha and Green Bay plus Buy Buy Baby stores in Brookfield and Madison. Amid the expected winddown of Bed Bath & Beyond, Big Lots and The Container Store will accept their coupons, the companies said.

Big Lots has 11 locations in Wisconsin including Greendale, Menomonee Falls, Mount Pleasant, West Bend and Sheboygan, according to the company's website. Meanwhile, The Container Store has one location listed in Wauwatosa.

The Container Store said it will offer a 20 percent discount on any item until May 31 when customers bring a competitor's blue coupon.

Big Lots said it will exchange any expired coupons from Bed Bath & Beyond through May 7. Shoppers with a coupon from the retailer can get 20 percent off their purchase of $50 or more, the company said.

"At Big Lots, our mission is to help people live big and save lots, which means we're always thinking of ways to step up and deliver even more value to consumers," said Bruce Thorn, president & CEO of Big Lots, in a news release. "For anyone who has missed their last opportunity to redeem one of these coupons, Big Lots is opening our doors to help you save on your entire purchase. This special offer can be used to purchase an assortment of great items for your home, such as bedding and bath accessories, furniture, décor and more."

The bankruptcy filing comes as shoppers are tightening their wallets. Bed Bath & Beyond announced plans to close around 150 of its stores in August amid a 20 percent workforce reduction.
