WAUKESHA, WI — A 17-year-old charged with stealing a car and gun from a Waukesha home is the son of two people recently found dead there, according to authorities.

Prosecutors on Monday charged Nikita Casap with theft, while the Waukesha County Medical Examiner's Office identified the deceased as his mother, Tatiana Casap, and his stepfather, Donald Mayer.

"The identification process necessitated a delay due to the need for the highest level of accuracy, ensuring both thoroughness and respect for the deceased and their families," the Waukesha County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Concerns about the family grew after the teen, who had a record of "perfect" attendance, suddenly racked up two weeks of unexcused absences at Waukesha West High School, the New York Post notes.

Meanwhile, Donald’s boss received a series of "weird or suspicious" texts between Feb. 13 and Feb. 25, with Donald claiming he was sick and thus unable to speak on the phone.

The Waukesha County Sheriff's Office received a welfare check request at about 9:45 a.m. on Feb. 28.

Deputies arrived at the family's Cider Hills Drive home in Waukesha and found two residents dead, FOX 6 reported.

The body of Tatiana, 35, was found in a hallway covered with towels and a blanket. Her body showed signs of decomposition, with a possible exit wound in her back and a bullet hole in a nearby wall, authorities said.

The body of Donald, 51, was found in an office buried under a pile of clothing, with an apparent wound to the back of his head.

Prosecutors said Nikita was not home during the welfare check, and the family's dog was also missing. A search of the home revealed paperwork indicating Donald had purchased a handgun, but the weapon was nowhere to be found.

Police in WaKeeney, Kansas, later stopped a stolen vehicle from Wisconsin after it allegedly ran a stop sign.

Casap was driving, with the family dog inside, authorities said.

Officers also found a gun on the passenger floor, along with Donald and Tatiana's driver’s licenses, some unused ammunition, and shell casings, according to police.

Casap was taken into custody. Prosecutors say he traveled through Illinois, Nebraska, and Colorado prior to his arrest in Kansas, ABC 7 reported.
