Arrest Made In Fatal Apartment Complex Shooting: Birmingham PD

Deandre Brantley, 24, of Birmingham has been charged with capital murder. Police said he turned himself in after the deadly shooting.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Birmingham police have arrested a man in connection with a fatal apartment complex shooting that occurred early Thursday morning.

Deandre Brantley, 24, of Birmingham has been charged with capital murder with no bond. Police said he turned himself in after shooting and killing Earnest Moody Jr., 33, of Birmingham.

Officers responded to 1916 14th Avenue North around 1:30 a.m. and found Moody lying on the steps of an apartment suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, according to Birmingham police. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Based on a preliminary investigation, police said Brantley fired shots at Moody from a vehicle before fleeing the scene. He then called police and turned himself in. Brantley was transported to the Birmingham Police Administration Building where detectives questioned him.

Police have not disclosed a motive for the shooting.

Moody is Birmingham’s 52nd homicide so far this year, according to the Birmingham Police Department. Of that number, four of those deaths have been deemed justifiable and no criminal charges filed.

Brantley remains behind bars at the Jefferson County jail.
