School Closures, Delays In Birmingham Area: Winter Weather Update
Several schools across the Birmingham metro area announced they will close Feb. 16 or delay opening due to severe winter weather.
BIRMINGHAM, AL — Threat of an ice storm and a winter weather advisory by the National Weather Service in Birmingham Monday have prompted several Birmingham-area schools to either delay the start of the school day Tuesday or close entirely for the day.
A day of cold rain in central Alabama Monday — combined with temperatures that are expected to reach as low as 15 degrees in the area — have weather experts and emergency management officials worried about road conditions for the next 24 hours.
Temperatures in Birmingham Tuesday will start in the low teens, according to the NWS office in Birmingham, and will reach a high of 31 degrees by the afternoon, meaning that at no point Tuesday are temperatures expected to get above freezing in Birmingham.
