Here are the top three stories today in Birmingham:
- Over 8,000 applications were submitted for free monthly guaranteed income for single mothers in Birmingham. The one-week application period for The Embrace Mothers pilot program ended on Feb. 7 and in that time, more than 19,000 women at least started an application — a figure equivalent to nearly 100 percent of the city’s total population of single female heads of household. Under the program, 110 single female heads of families will be provided a guaranteed income of $375 per month for a 12-month period. (AL.com)
- One woman died in a South Birmingham shooting on Monday night. Just after 6 p.m. in the 900 block of 46th Place North, police found a woman, identified as 26-year-old Tamaiya Morton, in a crashed vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. Morton was pronounced dead at the scene and a suspect was taken into custody at a nearby apartment complex, but she has not been charged. (Birmingham Patch)
- Birmingham's sister city in Ukraine, Vinnytsia, came under attack this weekend by Russia. On Sunday, eight missiles headed towards the city's airport killed nine people, including five civilians. Vinnytsia has been the sister city for Birmingham since 2003. (WBRC)

- Due to an early start to the 2022 growing season, the US National Weather Service - Birmingham, Alabama decided to start its Frost/Freeze Program on Mar. 7, instead of Mar. 15. Subfreezing temps are forecast for this weekend, so start preparing! (Facebook)
