Jefferson County Averaging Fewer Than 200 New Coronavirus Cases
Over the last week, Jefferson County has not had one day where more than 200 new COVID-19 cases were reported.
BIRMINGHAM, AL — After a month where new COVID-19 cases reached more than 900 on some days, Jefferson County has now seen a full week without reporting more than 200 new cases. The county reported 148 new cases Tuesday.
Tuesday's report was actually higher than Monday's reported cases, where the county only reported 85 new cases of the virus, the lowest new case total in more than three months.
February may have seen a decline in the number of new cases in Jefferson County so far, but reported deaths from COVID-19 have been relatively high, according to reports from the Alabama Department of Public Health. The county has reported 182 COVID-19 deaths in February so far.

Over the last 7 days, new COVID-19 case totals and deaths in Jefferson County:
- Feb. 10: 183 new cases, 11 deaths
- Feb. 11: 187 new cases, 20 deaths
- Feb. 12: 136 new cases, 13 deaths
- Feb. 13: 111 new cases, 20 deaths
- Feb. 14: 150 new cases, 0 deaths
- Feb. 15: 85 cases, 0 deaths
- Feb. 16: 148 new cases, 10 deaths
Vaccinations for the virus have ramped up in the the state and in Jefferson County in February, which may also contribute to a further decline of new cases. As of Wednesday, the state had administered 663,056 doses of the vaccine.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham opened three mass vaccination sites last week, and although winter weather closed the sites Tuesday, health officials expect the sites — at UAB Highlands, the Hoover Met and Parker High School — to likely distribute up to 1,000 doses per day.
Walmart made an announcement Tuesday that16 metro Birmingham locations would distribute the vaccine, possibly starting Friday.
