Here are the top three stories today in Birmingham:
- On Mar. 18 at 9:30 a.m., the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Alabama Public Television will host a commemoration and celebration of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth. The event will feature remarks from Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, Reverend Thomas L. Wilder, and representatives from Alabama Public Television. Shuttlesworth was a minister in Birmingham as well as a civil rights activist who led the fight against segregation. (AL.com)
- The remains of a World War II soldier from Birmingham have finally returned home and were laid to rest on Friday. Along with others still missing from the war, the name of 29-year-old Army Private First Class Bill Morrison is recorded on the Tablets of the Missing at Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium. Morrison's name will now have a rosette next to it, signifying he has been accounted for and laid to rest. (WVTM13 Birmingham)
- The Birmingham Police Department reports the death of a juvenile in an East Birmingham shooting Saturday afternoon. Officers found two people suffering from gunshot wounds in the 7500 block of 1st Avenue South around 3:00 p.m. The juvenile was taken to the hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries; as of the time of publication, no information has been released on the condition of the other victim.
