Here are the top three stories today in Birmingham:
- The Birmingham Police Department is hosting a women's personal hygiene drive in recognition of Women's History Month. The drive is taking place now through Mar. 29, 2022, to help women in the community. Requested items include body wash, washcloths, deodorant, and more, which will be collected and donated to a local women's shelter. (Press Release Desk)
- Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority is struggling to improve ridership numbers, which have been down since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, Birmingham’s MAX Transit numbers averaged about 3.1 million riders, according to CEO Charlotte Shaw. Now, that number has plummeted to about 1.2 million. Research is underway to make improvements, including working with area employers to see what can give them a boost in ridership numbers. (WIAT - CBS42.com)
- This coming week, Birmingham will honor the late Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth. To honor the Magic City's most prominent civil rights leader, Mayor Randall Woodfin will proclaim Friday as Fred Shuttlesworth Day to coincide with the 100th anniversary of his birthday on Mar. 18. Birmingham Civil Rights Institute will release the proclamation during an event, and the museum will offer free tours as part of the celebration. (WVTM13 Birmingham)
