Here are the top stories today in Hoover:

  1. This past Sunday, Hoover's own Elaina Burt was crowned Miss Alabama's Teen following a mesmerizing ballet performance. All of the top five finishers in the pageant will be receiving scholarship money ranging between $1,000 and $3,000 to one of the universities in their state, with the state winner receiving $7,500. Burt is excited to be on the big stage for the Miss America Teen pageant, where she will be able to have her voice heard around the country. (AL.com)
  2. Issues may arrive in the coming months as the larger cities and counties in Alabama are questioning the fairness of online sales taxes for online purchases in the state. The state of Alabama originally developed the Simplified Sellers Use Tax (SSUT) in 2015 and instituted it in 2017, essentially agreeing that all will pay an eight percent sales tax on online purchases. Mayors of the 10 biggest cities in the state ("the big 10") are requesting more transparency to make sure the remaining percentage not taken from the state is being distributed where it should be. Hoover and other cities in the big 10 are fighting for more of an understanding to make sure small business owners are not being wronged in the previously agreed-on program. (AL.com)
  3. After about a 10-year stretch of not very significant improvements being made to I-65, a project is on the way to make the busy road smoother and more commutable with more lanes to accommodate the heavy traffic. The current plan of attack has been to maintain the road so it is safe for commuting; however, with the new contract, the road should be improved and smoother for many years to come. The contract is expected to be completed this spring, and go into action this summer; on that timeline, the work will be completed by next summer. (WIAT - CBS42.com)
