Here are the top three stories in Hoover today:
- After a long time of serving the community, the baby mega-store Buy Buy Baby is closing its Hoover location in the Patton Creek Shopping Center. Buy Buy Baby is a part of the Bed Bath & Beyond chain that recently went bankrupt back in April; it is now winding operations as it works toward the official shutdown. The store announced it is no longer accepting gift cards, merchandise credits, or shopping rewards, and customers can expect to receive up to 50 percent discounts on merchandise. Although an official closing date has not been released yet, it can be expected soon, as 120 Buy Buy Baby stores are shutting down in addition to the 360 Bed Bath & Beyond locations. (AL.com)
- The date has officially been set for the special election to fill the Jefferson County Commission District 5 seat following Steve Ammons' departure. For potential candidates to be on the ballot, they must file the qualifying paperwork by Jun. 27 and have a statement of candidacy with the Jefferson County Probate Judge’s Office, as well as a petition signed by 100 qualified electors in Jefferson County Commission District 5. Currently, no candidates have filed the paperwork but former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Mike Bolin says he plans to run. There will be no Republican or Democratic primaries on this ballot. (Hoover Sun)
- Over the weekend, a group of Hoover neighbors teamed up to save an unresponsive man's life in Lake Cyrus Pool. Nurse Porsha Young had just given the kids a 10-minute warning before leaving the pool when she saw a man in the pool losing color and noticeably unresponsive. Luckily for the man, Young was accompanied by others at the pool with similar training — another nurse was present, as well as a doctor and EMT, who all came together to save this individual's life.
