Here are the top three stories in Hoover today:
- The Spain Park High School girls' basketball team in nearby Birmingham has caused an uproar after the team was reportedly denied a trophy for winning a championship due to the fact that they were not boys. The fifth-grade team had to choose between playing in the boys' championship or losing the opportunity to use their practice facility, and when they went on to win the championship against the boys' teams, they were denied the trophy. The incident has prompted criticism on Facebook from one of the player's mothers, Jayme Mashayekh, who stated that "it's definitely not about the trophy, [but] I don't think it's a lesson we should be teaching our boys or girls in this day and age." (Newsweek)
- Governor Kay Ivey has announced the allocation of $8.7 million in grants to help low-income families pay their water bills in Alabama. The funds will be divided among 18 community action agencies to provide regional distribution across all 67 counties in the state, with the Community Action Partnership of Middle Alabama Inc. and the Community Action Agency of Northeast Alabama Inc. receiving over $1 million combined. The program aims to provide emergency assistance to those who have difficulty paying their water bills, particularly the elderly and families with children. (AL.com)
- On Wednesday, Mar. 8, the Hoover Public Library will host a Well-Made Workshop featuring clinical herbalist Cameron Strouss. From 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Fitzgerald and Shakespeare Rooms, attendees will learn about herbal first aid and how to utilize herbs found in their backyards to treat common ailments. Limited space is available; interested participants must register to attend. (Hoover Library)
