Here are the top three stories today in Huntsville:
- Boeing has been awarded a $70.5 million defense contract to develop aerial weapon technology, and the company announced that 36 percent of the testing and development will take place in Huntsville. This project involves the development of a weapon to counter hypersonic missiles, which Boeing program executive Gil Griffin described as, "among the most dangerous and rapidly evolving threats facing national security." During the four-year contract, Boeing will conduct dynamics analysis, test flights, and wind tunnel testing. (AL.com)
- A group of Huntsville residents has started a donation drive to benefit victims of a recent fire at the Reserve at Research Park apartments. The fire on Tuesday, Sep. 12 caused significant damage to multiple units, leaving several families without necessary items. Huntsville resident Antonia Simons is working with a group of friends to collect donations of food, clothing, and toiletries, which can be dropped off at the Reserve at Research Park leasing office. - A new playground and skate park are now open at John Hunt Park. The Get-A-Way Skate Park has been in the works for nearly two years, and its design includes features for all skill levels, including a street plaza, two snake runs, and three bowl areas. The 52,000-square-foot skate park was made possible through a partnership with the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville, the City of Huntsville, and the Skateboard Project. It is located between the soccer fields and the new Kids Space playground. (WAFF)
