Here are the top three stories in Huntsville today:

  1. According to the Huntsville Police Department, a shooting incident that occurred early on Monday, Sep. 11, left one person injured. The shooting took place near the intersection of Poplar Avenue and Beard Street. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered one person with non-life-threatening injuries. Police are still investigating the incident. (WHNT)
  2. It has been 60 years since Alabama public schools became integrated, and the state's first Black child to attend a public school commemorated the anniversary by recreating his historic walk to school. On Saturday, Sep. 9, Sonnie Hereford IV spoke to a small crowd and shared memories of his family receiving bomb and death threats. Hereford was 6 years old when he walked hand-in-hand with his father, who was one of the plaintiffs in the suit against the Huntsville School System for their segregation practices. Hereford's daughter, Dr. Beth Hereford-Patin, attended the ceremony and expressed optimism that Huntsville citizens will continue to work towards equitable schools. (Rocket City Now)
  3. The Huntsville Police Citizens Advisory Council (HPCAC) is holding a public forum today, Sep. 12, at the Jackson Way Baptist Church Community Room to allow residents to get to know their school resource officers (SRO). The forum will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will cover SRO responsibilities and the different roles they take on within a school. This forum is part of a monthly series held by the HPCAC that features roundtable discussions with members of the Huntsville Police Department, the HPCAC, and the public. Click here to learn more.
