Here are the top three stories today in Huntsville:

  1. Last week, the Huntsville City Council approved its 2024 fiscal year annual budget, which goes into effect this week. Standout amendments in this year's budget include authorizing a new position prioritizing affordable housing, allocating $25,000 to United Cerebral Palsy, and a 2.5 percent cost of living adjustment for city employees, separate from their merit raises. A comprehensive plan addressing affordable, accessible housing will be presented to the City Council on Jun. 13, 2024. (Huntsville Business Journal)
  2. Yesterday morning, a man crashed his vehicle through a home in Huntsville on Henson Drive. According to police reports, the driver drove through several yards, hit an unoccupied vehicle, and then hit the house — when interviewed at the scene, the driver said he did not remember anything. Nobody was injured during the incident; however, crews are evaluating if the home is still structurally sound. (WAFF)
  3. At Mayor Tommy Battle’s annual State of the City address last week, he announced plans for a major, two-day music festival at John Hunt Park. If approved by the City Council, festival producer C3 Presents — the company responsible for Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza — would create a one-of-a-kind music experience bringing top-tier talent and tourism to Huntsville. The date on which the City Council will vote on this music festival has yet to be scheduled. (Huntsville Government)
