Here are the top three stories today in Mobile:
- Mobile's Fat Tuesday trash was cleaned up on Wednesday by 4:30 p.m. The massive cleanup operation began immediately after the Order of Myths concluded their final parade of the Mardi Gras season in Mobile. A team of workers from the Downtown Mobile Alliance and crews from the city began cleaning the streets block by block to ensure that everything was spotless. The Alliance had been planning the cleanup for months, and with 15 workers on the ground and numerous city crews, they collected hundreds of bags of trash and thousands of pounds of litter. - A video of a Mobile Police Department homicide detective playing football with youth in Mobile has gone viral after being posted on Tuesday. Detective Glenn Barton, featured in the video, expressed his appreciation for the positive response and believes it shows the importance of community policing in building relationships and mutual respect between law enforcement and citizens. "I have gotten [a] lot of personal messages through Facebook saying this is what we want to see in the community, this is what we want to see out of police officers, I'm really grateful to be a part of that," Barton said. - Despite the good times rolling during this year's Carnival season, many attendees experienced frustration when trying to share their fun on social media due to poor cell service. Kendall Brown and Morgan McDonald were just two of the many who found their cell service practically non-existent, especially during the busier days of Joe Cain Day, Lundi Gras, and Fat Tuesday. Despite complaints primarily coming from Verizon users, even those with other cell carriers, like AT&T, also had issues, prompting Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson to consider improving cell service for the next Mardi Gras by potentially bringing in boosters from primary carriers.
