TUSCALOOSA, AL — Former President Donald Trump has reportedly withdrawn his endorsement of Republican congressman and U.S. Senate candidate Mo Brooks, according to a report from Maggie Haberman of the New York Times.

The news comes as Brooks lags GOP challengers Katie Britt and Mike Durant in both polling and fundraising ahead of the Republican Primary, in addition to waning support from Trump's supporters in Alabama due to his comments last summer regarding the 2020 presidential election.

"When I endorsed Mo Brooks, he took a 44-point lead and was unstoppable," the former president said in a statement. "He then hired a new campaign staff who 'brilliantly' convinced him to 'stop talking about the 2020 Election. He listened to them."

Indeed, as Patch previously reported last August, Brooks was booed and given the middle finger by scores of attendees at a Trump rally in Cullman after he encouraged those in attendance to "move on" from the 2020 election, in order to focus on winning back the White House in 2024.

More recently, a survey of Republicans conducted this month by Cygnal on behalf of Alabama Daily News and Gray Television showed 34.6% expressed their intention to vote for Durant, while 28.4% chose Britt and 16.1% chose Brooks. Another 14.1% reportedly remain undecided.

The 45th president, who was joined by Brooks at a Jan. 6, 2021 rally just prior to a violent and deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol that attempted to overturn the results of a free and fair election, also said Brooks became "woke" when he told Trump's supporters to put the results behind them. In co-opting a term from the liberal left, this would become the final straw for Trump, who doubled down on wholly unsubstantiated rumors that the election was "stolen."

"When I heard his statement, I said 'Mo, you just blew the Election, and there's nothing you can do about it.' Very sad, but since he decided to go in another direction, so have I, and I am hereby withdrawing my Endorsement of Mo Brooks for Senate."
