The program is set to launch in August 2026 and will move forward only if at least 125 students qualify and are accepted.

TCS explained that students do not need to be currently enrolled in the district to apply, but they must be zoned for a TCS high school. Those accepted will remain enrolled in their home school while completing coursework online.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to providing families with flexibility and high-quality learning options,” TCS Superintendent Mike Daria said. “The TCS Virtual Program allows students to benefit from online instruction while remaining connected to the extracurricular activities, supports and school community of their home high school.”

School system officials said the program will combine self-paced, asynchronous coursework with live instruction delivered by certified TCS teachers.

TCS students will also have access to career-technical courses at the Tuscaloosa Career and Technology Academy (TCTA) and remain eligible for dual enrollment opportunities at the University of Alabama, Stillman College and Shelton State Community College.

Virtual students will continue to be part of their zoned school community and may participate in athletics, marching band, clubs and other extracurricular activities. They will also graduate from their home high school alongside their peers.

Online applications for the TCS Virtual Program will open Jan. 5, 2026, and close Jan. 30, 2026, at 3 p.m.
