First, today's weather: Rain in the evening and overnight making for a refreshing high of 93 and a low of 79.

Here are the top stories today in Phoenix:

1. With the help of the Phoenix Rescue Mission, Michael Brinkman has his own apartment for the first time in years. Brinkman had already been couch surfing and sleeping on the sidewalk, and then lost his job at the start of the pandemic. The Rescue Mission helped him obtain an emergency housing voucher and find an apartment complex that would take it. (Patch)
2. Grand Canyon University, a private Christian school, expects its largest incoming class yet when the fall semester begins Sept. 7. The university is set to see 9,000 new students this year. (AZ Big Media)
3. The Arizona Animal Welfare League is waiving adoption fees at its main shelter from now through Sept. 5. Like other shelters in the Valley and in Tucson, the league's shelter is packed. (Your Valley)
4. As Louisiana reels from the impact of Hurricane Ida, areas of the Southwest, including Phoenix are set to see rain this week in part due to the remnants of Tropical Storm Nora. Nora moved off the west coast of Mexico and was downgraded from a hurricane on Sunday. (Phoenix Patch)
5. The Phoenix Blues Society is bringing back live music after nearly two years off due to the pandemic. The first event, set for Sept. 5, is a fundraiser and blues showcase. Jim Crawford, president of the society, said to an extent it feels like the society is starting over. (The Arizona Republic)
