Livestream: Funeral Service For Slain Maricopa County Deputy
The service for Deputy Juan Ruiz begins Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.
AVONDALE, AZ — The funeral service for slain Maricopa County Sheriff's Deputy Juan Ruiz, who was killed in the line of duty, is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Ruiz, 45, was beaten unconscious as he was putting Clinton Robert Hurley into a holding cell Oct. 9. Ruiz succumbed to his injuries Oct. 11.
Hurley, who was wanted on a probation violation for child molestation, is accused of beating Ruiz after the deputy removed Hurley's handcuffs to put him in a jail cell, authorities said.

Ruiz was born in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico and was the youngest of six children, according to his obituary. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1980 and became a citizen after he turned 18. He was a fan of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Las Vegas Raiders and loved animals, especially is lab, Zumba, his obituary said. He shared a passion for geeky things with his nieces and nephews and loved spending time with family and friends. Ruiz left his work in the insurance industry in 2018 to pursue his dream of working in law enforcement, according to his obituary.
