Mother Arrested On Suspicion Of Murder: 2 Children Shot, 1 killed

Esperanza Isidro, 2, was shot and killed and her 6-year-old brother remains in critical condition.

PHOENIX, AZ — A Phoenix mother was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of murder after her daughter was shot and killed and her son was shot and critically wounded, Phoenix police said.

Esther Callejas was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of one count of first degree murder and one count of attempted first degree murder, according to Phoenix police. Bond information was not immediately available.

Esperanza Isidro, 2, was pronounced dead at a hospital on Monday. Her 6-year-old brother, who police did not identify by name, is in critical condition at a local hospital, police said.

Callejas, who suffered a gunshot wound to the hand, was treated and then detained by police.

The shooting happened around 11:45 a.m. Monday near the intersection of 8th Place and Broadway Road.
The children's father, who police did not identify, was cooperating with the investigation, according to police.
