Here are the top three stories in Phoenix today:

  1. Police removed rainbow-colored tablets from distribution in Phoenix, a color never before seen by officials. According to the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration, the color trend is a technique used to attract younger people to buy addictive and possibly fatal fentanyl. Police are warning parents of the new drug appearance as Halloween approaches. (Daily Independent)
  2. A regional food innovation hub is in the beginning stages of construction at a former landfill in the southern Phoenix area. The 20-acre, year-round marketplace will be named Arizona Fresh: Agri-Food Innovation Center and will create jobs and economic development, improve efficiency, and reduce food waste. Developers plan on expanding the center to include education programs with research resources. (KJZZ)
  3. Heat-related deaths in Maricopa County reached record-breaking numbers this summer, according to the county’s public health department. About 80 percent of the confirmed 359 fatalities occurred outdoors with little information detailing how much of the population was unsheltered. The spike in deaths has opened communication about how to protect vulnerable populations from these frequent heat waves. (ABC15 Arizona in Phoenix)

Today in Phoenix:

  • Arizona State Fair At Arizona State Fairgrounds (All Day; runs through Sunday, Oct. 30)
  • Exhibition - Philip C. Curtis And The Landscapes Of Arizona At Phoenix Art Museum (10:00 AM)

From my notebook:

  • If you’re looking for a new place to satisfy your taste buds – and your knack for history – you can find nostalgia and a bite to eat nestled in old-time Valley homes. (Phoenix New Times)
  • Dress up in your best costume and head to Downtown Phoenix this weekend to celebrate Halloween! From live music to ghost tours and trick or treating, you are sure to find a spooky experience in this atmosphere. Get all the details at the link. (Downtown Phoenix, AZ)
  • It can be tough to choose between working full time and raising a family. The City of Phoenix is making this decision easier by encouraging its employees to take up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave after birth, adoption, or foster care. (City of Phoenix, AZ USA via Facebook)
