Phoenix Sets Temperature Record Thursday at 111

An excessive heat warning is in effect for the Phoenix metro area Sunday and Monday.

PHOENIX, AZ — Phoenix set a high temperature record Thursday, at a toasty 111 degrees, which is 8 degrees above normal for the date, according to the National Weather Service.

The previous record for Sept. 9 of 110 was set more than 30 years ago in 1990.

The National Weather Service in a Facebook post called the extreme heat this time of year, "not unheard of but definitely uncommon."

It's looking to remain hot through the weekend, with an excessive heat warning in effect for the Phoenix metro area from 10 a.m. Sunday through 8 p.m. Monday. Highs in the Valley on Sunday and Monday are expected to reach between 106-110 degrees, the weather service predicted.

Highs on Friday and Saturday are expected to hit 108 and 107 degrees respectively.
