Phoenix residents saw the first of two increases of their water rates in October, next is in March 2022.

The Phoenix City Council approved a 3% increase as part of a 6.5% rise in price. The next scheduled increase will be the remaining 3.5%.

The Phoenix Water Services Department estimated the usage price increase will raise monthly bills $2.40 for an average single-family home.

The March 2022 increase will not affect the monthly service charge. This charge, per Phoenix Water Services, is a flat rate for allotted gallon usage during certain seasons.

After customers consume water over the flat rate allotment, the newly increased rate will be charged.

From October through May, the city gives residents 4,488 gallons at a flat rate before adding per-unit charge. From June through September, the city gives 7,480 gallons at a flat rate.

The new rate in the current season in Phoenix is $3.90 per unit. December starts the low season with a rate of $3.33 per unit once usage goes over the allotment.

The city will invest the new funds into the water system and infrastructure.

During the Feb. 23 city council meeting for the proposed rate increase, Phoenix City Engineer Eric Froberg presented the need for replacing water the city’s pipelines. The system currently used in Phoenix was built between the 1950 and 1970. Froberg explained that these pipes have a life expectancy of 75 years. That makes 2025 the first expiration date.

In addition, the city plans to use the funds on treatment plants and reservoirs for drinking water.

The next change, in March 2022, will be $4.07 a unit for the medium season and $3.49 for the low season.

The Phoenix City Council approved the rate increase on March 17, 2021.
