2 People Died In Chandler When A Plane And Helicopter Crashed Mid-Air

Both the copper and the plane were operated by flight schools.

CHANDLER, AZ — Two people died when a helicopter and plane crashed mid-air in Chandler Friday morning, police said.

The plane managed to safely land at Chandler Municipal Airport but the helicopter crashed into a nearby field and the two people inside of it died, according to Chandler Police Sgt. Jason McClimans. Police did not release the names of the people in the chopper.

The helicopter was operated by Quantum Helicopters and the plane was operated by Flight Operations Academy, according to police. Both are flight schools.

Police did not know the cause of the crash.

The airport will be closed to takeoffs and landings for several hours while an investigation into the crash is underway. As of Friday morning Chandler police were waiting for investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration to arrive.

Police are asking anyone who may have captured the crash on camera or who witnessed it from the ground to contact them at 480-782-4130.

"Any info we get from witnesses will help investigators," McClimans said.
