Here are the top four stories today in Phoenix:
- Arizona’s attorney general agreed not to impose a near-total ban until 2023, allowing Planned Parenthood Arizona to continue abortion services at locations throughout metro Phoenix and the state. The abortion law, created in 1864 and put on hold due to Roe v. Wade, would lead to a prison sentence of two to five years if the pregnancy does not jeopardize the mother’s life. (FOX 10 News Phoenix)
- According to a new study by SmartAsset, Phoenix ranked within the top 20 cities with the highest income needed to afford rent. About $57,000 is the recommended salary for a one-bedroom apartment in Phoenix. The cost of living in bigger cities is already high, but rising inflation and interest rates make affording the necessities difficult. (AZ Big Media)
- Thanks to a microchip, the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control was able to identify and return a missing 13-year-old Schnauzer mix to his family after being lost for nearly a year. The pup had no significant injuries other than fur matting. The family almost gave up hope entirely but now strongly advocates for pet microchipping. (KTAR.com)
- Phoenix is joining other cities to conserve and decrease the use of Colorado River water. By creating a Memorandum of Understanding, the cities agree to encourage conservation strategies, including expanding water reuse and recycling programs and extending water use efficiency. Phoenix has made strides in its conservation efforts with a 30 percent reduction in use per capita in the past 30 years. (Daily Independent)
