Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:

  1. Silvestre Herrera Elementary School, the community group Trees Matter, and Arizona Public Service (APS) have teamed up to plant 30 trees on the elementary school grounds. Through the program, students learned about earth science and how plants grow. The students, ranging from preschool to eighth grade, also named each tree. (Arizona's Family)
  2. On Dec. 11, Mayor Kate Gallego spoke to the first in-person gathering of the National Council of Jewish Women Arizona since March 2020. The organization aims to “[safeguard] and [expand] access to abortion and contraception, protecting and promoting the vote and pushing for fair, independent and qualified judges on federal courts.” The group advocates for justice in immigration, LGBTQ rights, public education, sexual and domestic violence, voting rights, and racial justice. (Jewish News of Greater Phoenix)
  3. Police have identified Anthony Jones as the shooter in a Sunday night incident on Roosevelt Row. Jones faces two counts of aggravated assault on an officer as well as shooting a firearm in city limits. The incident began when Jones asked officers responding to a different call a question before walking away. When they approached him again, Jones ran and shot at officers. (The Arizona Republic)
