Student Debt Per Capita Fluctuates in Arizona and Delaware

Arizona and Delaware have seen drastic changes in their student debt per capita in the last three years

Delaware’s student debt per capita increased by 19.6% from 2017 to 2018. Perhaps Delaware’s $6,040 student debt in 2018 is due to rising tuition costs at the University of Delaware. The state ranks No.40 for its high amount of student debt per capita, lead by Georgia with $7,250 per person.

Inversely, Arizona saw a rise, then abrupt drop in student debt per capita over the last three years. Hovering at $4,430 per person in 2018, Arizona ranks No. 8 for its low amounts of student debt, with Wyoming taking the lead with the least amount of student loan debt per capita. Perhaps Arizona’s decrease in student debt is due to the number of student jobs and paid internships available or the state’s booming tourism industry.

In 2018, the 50-state average student debt per capita was $5,438.04, which placed Delaware above average and Arizona below average for student debt. Hypothetically, if every U.S. citizen was willing to pay $5,438.04, we could erase all student debt in the U.S. Unfortunately, money doesn’t grow on trees, so it looks like you’re on your own for this one.
