Here are the top stories today in Phoenix:

  1. Phoenix's oldest and first synagogue is celebrating its centennial this month. The building started out as a home in 1921 to Congregation Beth Israel, but through the years it has served many others. It was a place of worship for Phoenix's Chinese-American community from 1951-1981, when it became a Baptist church for Spanish speakers. Then the Arizona Jewish Historical Society purchased the building and began restorations in 2008. (AZFamily)
  2. Some predictions for Arizona residential real estate in the next year: Migration to the state will increase as the weather becomes more pleasant during the winter months. And home prices will keep increasing as supply continues to far outweigh demand. (AZ Big Media)
  3. Some Phoenix bands are putting vaccine requirements with no opt-outs on their shows, while others are deliberately steering clear of the mask debate and letting the venues determine masking policies for their shows. Most agree that it stinks for the enforcement of masking policies to fall to the venues. (Phoenix New Times)
  4. A man was extradited to Phoenix from Mexico after fleeing the country in 2012. He was arrested for a warrant on suspicion of two counts of first-degree murder. He is accused of slaying his estranged wife and her unborn child in Phoenix in 2012. (ABC15 Arizona)
  5. New Arizona laws went into effect Friday. One of them means that thousands of drivers whose licenses were suspended due to unpaid civil fines will have their licenses reinstated. Another gives public school parents several chances to view sex education materials before their child begins taking a class or a new class approved by the school board. (Phoenix Patch)
