Alameda Fire Dept.'s Water Rescue Team Honored

The Alameda Fire Department (AFD) was recognized for their outstanding performance with its Water Rescue Response Team at the Urban Shield 2013 Training Exercise, held October 25 – 28, hosted by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office. AFD received a “3rd Place” Award for their efforts competing against teams from all over the Bay Area. 

The AFD Water Rescue Response Team showcased its abilities from their new fire-rescue boat, which was purchased this year. The majority of the funding for AFD's fire-rescue boat came from a Port Security GRant Program award through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Division Fire Chief Doug Long, supervising Chief of AFD Marine Operations, said, “The accomplishments of our Water Rescue Team using the fireboat at this year’s Urban Shield event highlighted their dedication and commitment to the program. The fireboat will be a valuable asset for the entire Bay Area.” 

Urban Shield presents a multi-layered training exercise to enhance the skills and abilities of regional first responders, as well as those responsible for coordinating and managing large scale events. Urban Shield training exercises occur throughout the Bay Area, with national and international participation. The exercise evaluates the existing level of preparedness and capabilities, identifying not only what agencies do well, but areas in need of improvement.
