Health Dept: Nearly 60 Confirmed Monkeypox Cases in Alameda County

There are 786 probable/confirmed monkeypox cases in California, 58 of which are Alameda County residents, the county health dept. says.

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA -- As of July 28, there are 786 probable/confirmed monkeypox cases from California, 58 of which are Alameda County residents (not including City of Berkeley Local Health Jurisdiction’s case numbers), according to the Alameda County Health Dept.

In Berkeley, there were six monkeypox cases as of July 19, according to the city. Nationwide, there have been 4,907 confirmed cases of monkeypox from 46 U.S. states and territories, data show.

Reports from investigations in several countries and the U.S., including in California, suggest that person-to-person transmission through close contact is fueling spread and that clinical case presentations have not always been characteristic of classic monkeypox infections.

In this outbreak, US cases of monkeypox have been identified since early May 2022; many of the cases have involved men who identify as transgender, gay, bisexual or other men who have sex with men without a history of travel to an endemic country.
