📰 News we're reading

1. Analysis: Two Possibilities for Alameda Point VA Property Following Veterans Project Cancellation (alamedapost.com) — Alameda officials and veterans groups are pushing the VA to reverse its cancellation of a planned clinic and columbarium at Alameda Point, leaving 624 acres in limbo. Two main paths now loom: the land could revert to the Navy and City, expanding a potential regional park and wildlife refuge, or be disposed of by GSA, possibly to other public agencies.

2. Silicon Valley lawmaker Sen. Aisha Wahab may be eyeing Swalwell's congressional seat (localnewsmatters.org) — Most of Alameda County’s congressional District 14 could see a new representative if state Sen. Aisha Wahab decides to run for Eric Swalwell’s open seat. Her move would also open a competitive state Senate race spanning parts of Alameda and Santa Clara counties, potentially reshaping East Bay and Silicon Valley political representation.

3. Experts Discuss Work to Streamline Bay Area Public Transit (ccpulse.org) — Bay Area transit leaders say new Clipper discounts and unified station signs are making it easier to ride across the region, including for Alameda County commuters. But agencies face a looming funding gap, and a November 2026 sales-tax measure could direct new money to transit systems serving Alameda and neighboring counties.

4. Oakland launches literacy program leaders say could boost education, curb crime (localnewsmatters.org) — Oakland’s new “Oakland Reads 1234!” program aims to boost early literacy and reduce crime, and local results are being measured against other Alameda County school districts, including Alameda’s. With Oakland Unified lagging county peers, officials hope free resources and parent incentives will close reading gaps for young children and improve long-term safety across the East Bay.

5. US seizes 2 Venezuela-linked oil tankers, 1 flying Russian flag (yourcentralvalley.com) — A U.S. Coast Guard cutter homeported in Alameda helped track one of two Venezuela-linked oil tankers seized for alleged sanctions violations, tying a major international operation back to the Island City. Federal officials say the Bella-1 and Sophia were intercepted in the Atlantic and Caribbean as part of a broader crackdown on illicit Venezuelan oil shipments and pressure on that country’s leadership.
