VICTORVILLE, CA — A Victorville man is dead after he allegedly shot at San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies and they returned fire, killing him.

The incident began Nov. 28, when deputies conducted a traffic stop on a motorist at Waterman and Highland avenues in San Bernardino.

The deputies suspected the 29-year-old man behind the wheel — Charles Murray — was in possession of a firearm and ordered him out of his vehicle, according to the sheriff's department.

Warrants were issued for Murray’s arrest and a search of his home in the 12500 block of Bermuda Court in Victorville.

Deputies attempted to serve the warrants on Dec. 3, but Murray armed himself and began firing at deputies and a sheriff’s helicopter, the law enforcement agency reported.

During the incident, "an uninvolved second person in the home exited and was rescued," according to the sheriff's department.

After that person was safe, Murray exited his home and fired at deputies from his backyard, the department continued.

Deputies returned fire, striking and killing Murray. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation into the lethal shooting is underway.
