BERKELEY, CA — Amid swelling demand in the aftermath of a glowing New York Times review, an acclaimed Berkeley bagel shop earlier this month announced expansion plans.

Boichik Bagels announced plans to build a bagel plant at an 18,000-square-foot property in Berkeley’s Gilman District on its Instagram page.

Long lines stretching out the door greeted Boichik Bagels almost immediately after it opened its doors to its 3170 College Ave. location in the fall of 2019.

Demand quickly exploded after New York Times food critic Tejal Rao described Boichik's bagels as "some of the finest New York-style bagels I've ever tasted.”

“They just happen to be made in Berkeley."

The Gilman District site will be used as a wholesale plant that will bring the company’s bagels to restaurants and grocery stores throughout the Bay Area, Boichik Bagels owner Emily Winston told SFGate.

The company could soon return a frozen bagel mail order service it nixed in the aftermath of the New York Times review, Winston told the news outlet.

“We had over 100 mail orders come in when that New York Times piece came out,” Winston told SFGate.

“We’re not set up for mail order at all, but we could bring that back. The demand is there, people want good bagels.”
