Berkeley Artist Who Photographs Homeless Wins City Hall Fight

Orie Rutchick, who is known to take photos of the homeless, lobbied for a new ordinance to support artists.

BERKELEY, CA -- A street photographer whose subjects include homeless people won a battle at Berkeley City Hall recently after elected leaders approved a new ordinance. The ordinance allows local artists to use public space to conduct their work, according to KTVU.

KTVU reported Orie Rutchick's battle with City Hall began earlier this year when he was told he was illegally operating a photo booth.

Rutchick contacted elected officials to tell them the subjects —homeless people — of his art appreciated his work.

“Each week I deliver back a set of three fiber prints, at no charge, to each of my subjects from the previous week's session," said Rutchick, according to KTVU. "In many cases, these photographs are the only formal portraits they have had since they were children.”
