Berkeley Panel To Explore Math As 'The Universe’s Code'

BERKELEY, CA — The University of California, Berkeley invites the public to give some thought to mathematics and physics – and to hear the perspectives of notable individuals in the field.

On Thursday, the university is hosting a panel discussion titled “Math: The Universe’s Code or Human Creation?” at 5 p.m. in the Lawrence Hall of Science auditorium.

The panel will explore whether mathematics is “a human invention or woven into the fabric of reality,” according to the UC Berkeley website, with the “fun and thought-provoking discussion [being] open to all curious minds.”

The panel consists of UC Berkeley faculty members, including Kenneth A. Ribet, Mina Aganagic, and Raphael Bousso and Steven Kahn, UC Berkeley’s Dean of Mathematical & Physical Sciences.

Stephen Sharpe, a graduate of Berkeley who teaches in the Department of Physics at the University of Washington, will be the moderator.
