Berkeley Plans Surveillance Camera Expansion: Report

The move comes amid an emerging crime wave​ in the Bay Area, among other regions.

BERKELEY, CA — A city more committed than most to polices that aim to promote a more just future is facing present-day concerns that can't wait for long-term solutions to take effect.

That's thinking behind Berkeley’s plan to expand its neighborhood surveillance camera program, Jesse Arreguín told KTVU Thursday.

Berkeley already has surveillance cameras in several neighborhoods, the report said.

The move comes amid an emerging crime wave in the Bay Area, among other regions.

The cameras are expected to cost around $1.3 million and are expected to be installed early next year, the report said.

The surveillance cameras are part of a broader $5 million public safety plan, according to the report.

"While we're having that conversation about re-imagining public safety we can't ignore the immediate issues we are having right now," Arreguin told the television station.
