1. Balancing Academics and Adventure: How California's Outdoors Enhance the Haas Experience (berkeley.edu) — UC Berkeley Haas MBA students are finding that nearby Berkeley hills, parks, and the marina are as central to their experience as the classroom, offering quick escapes for hiking, yoga, and water sports. From the Fire Trails and Tilden Park to the Berkeley Marina and campus groves, the story highlights how local nature supports students’ mental health, community-building, and academic focus.

2. Sheep study shows tiny ultrasound array can track blood pressure under the skin (newswise.com) — UC Berkeley researchers helped develop a tiny implantable ultrasound sensor that can continuously track blood pressure under the skin, potentially improving long-term hypertension care. Tested in a sheep, the device matched gold-standard arterial line readings while avoiding the discomfort and inaccuracy of cuffs and some wearables. The work, partly backed by Berkeley’s Sensor and Actuator Center, could eventually support more personalized cardiovascular monitoring.

3. Homeless youth say they need more from schools, social services • Kentucky Lantern (kentuckylantern.com) — Berkeley readers should know UC Berkeley public health researchers co-led a major national study on youth homelessness, highlighting how early school and family interventions could prevent many cases. The report, with Covenant House, urges youth-specific housing, mental health care, and stronger adult support networks tailored to diverse groups of vulnerable young people.

4. Astronomers Witness Massive Cosmic Collisions Around a Nearby Star (scitechdaily.com) — Berkeley readers might be interested to know that UC Berkeley astronomer Paul Kalas led a team that directly imaged the dusty aftermath of two massive collisions around the nearby star Fomalhaut. The work, involving several current and former UC Berkeley researchers, suggests such violent smashups may be more common in young planetary systems and could even fool future telescopes searching for exoplanets.

5. San Francisco police chief names Nicole Jones as assistant chief (localnewsmatters.org) — Berkeley readers may recognize a local tie in San Francisco’s latest police leadership change: new assistant chief Nicole Jones holds an anthropology degree from UC Berkeley. She’ll serve as second-in-command at SFPD, overseeing administration, risk management, communications, community engagement, and policy as the department continues reorganizing under recently sworn-in Chief Derrick Lew.
