“West Berkeley has seen a terrifying uptick in gun violence over the past year,” Taplin said in a statement.

“I empathize with community members who are losing patience with the violence erupting in our neighborhoods, threatening their households, and making parks, schools and streets unsafe.

“Gun violence and the proliferation of illegal firearms are a menace. I’m working closely with the City Manager’s office and the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence on an ordinance to prohibit

untraceable ghost guns, and I’ve also worked with local civil rights leaders to introduce a budget

referral for automated license plate readers in high-crime areas.

“We need to act quickly. Enough is enough.”

The shooting was first reported by Berkeleyside.
