Deadline For Berkeley Earthquake Retrofit Grant Approaches
Homeowners may receive grants of up to $13,000, according to Cal OES officials.
BERKELEY, CA — Homeowners in San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley have until the end of May to apply for earthquake retrofit grants being administered by the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services.
People can apply for grants of up to $13,000 through the EarthquakeSoftStory.com website through May 31, according to Cal OES officials.
To be eligible, people must own and primarily reside in the home for which the work is intended and live in one of 82 ZIP codes, which are listed on the website's ZIP code look-up tool.

Also, the house needs to have been built prior to 2000, have a living space over a garage, be no more than two stories tall, built on level ground or a slight slope, wood-framed and have not already been the subject of a soft-story retrofit.
Homeowners will be chosen for one of 375 grants via a random drawing.

Licensed contractors can sign up to be listed in the Earthquake Soft-Story retrofit directory by visiting the website at www.californiaresidentialmitigationprogram.com/Contractors-Design-Professionals/Register.
