Taller Buildings Near Campus May Alleviate Berkeley Housing Crunch
"The student housing crisis has become the defining characteristic of the student experience at UC Berkeley."
BERKELEY —Berkeley will now permit higher buildings in the neighborhood near the UC campus, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, a key move to ease the student housing crunch.
The Berkeley City Council voted Tuesday to change zoning laws to allow buildings as tall as 12 stories near campus in the Southside area. Proposed modifications will allow for an estimated 2,652 residential units in the region bordered by Bancroft Way, Prospect Street, Dwight Way and Fulton Street.
"I could not be more relieved and excited that the city has finally taken this overdue and urgent step," said Council Member Rigel Robinson, who represents the Southside neighborhood, "The student housing crisis has become the defining characteristic of the student experience at UC Berkeley."
