BEVERLY HILLS, CA — Beverly Hills staple Lawry's The Prime Rib helped beef up Rose Bowl competitors ahead of Monday's game.

As it has for 66 years, the steakhouse hosted Rose Bowl competitors from University of Utah on Thursday and Penn State University on Friday for a celebratory pre-game meal. Penn State on Monday bested Utah 35-21.

"Words are hard to describe coming back to Lawry's Beef Bowl after a two-year hiatus," said Richard R. Frank, the chairman of the board of Lawry's Restaurants Inc., whose late father, Richard N. Frank, conceived the Beef Bowl in 1956, shortly after becoming Lawry's president.
"It's rewarding, gratifying, heart-warming. It just feels good. It just feels right. It's what we should be doing and so happy to do it."

Lawry's had to cancel the celebration in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, making this year's return extra special. Athletes enjoyed a dramatic arrival alongside live marching bands and police escorts, followed by a ceremonial salad spinning and first prime rib cut.

Penn State Defensive tackle PJ Mustipher performed the first cut for the team.

"I was a little bit nervous at the beginning," Mustipher said. "I just didn't want to mess it up with everybody watching. Once I got going and the guy was helping me out a little bit I got in a rhythm."

Athletes enjoyed a traditional prime rib dinner, with a salad, prime rib with Yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes, gravy, creamed corn and horseradish. The meal was washed down with apple pie.
