California is For Lovers: Best Cities for Singles

Three of the top 10 "best cities for singles" are located in California, according to a new report.

When it comes to finding love in the new year, California singles are better off than most, according to a study by WalletHub.

That's because three of the top 10 best cities for singles nationwide are located right here in California.

About 109 million, or roughly 45 percent, of the U.S. adult population is single as of 2015 — so your chances of finding a mate are better than ever, WalletHub says. But if you want to increase your chances, you might want to head to San Francisco, San Diego or Los Angeles.

Those three cities are the No. 1, 4, and 10 best places to be single, respectively, according to the financial advice website.

San Francisco was chosen as the No. 1 place for its abundance of nightlife, among other reasons.

But don’t pack your bags just yet. Experts said you shouldn’t determine the city to live in based solely on how easy it is to find a mate. Singles should also look at cities that offer them a variety of things that interest them, such as cultural offerings, educational opportunities or sporting events, said Eric Klinenberg, professor of sociology at New York University.

"More specifically, look for neighborhoods where single people are concentrated," Klinenber said. "They tend to have more public life, more places that draw you out of your apartment and into the social world. Many nights you'll want to use your home as a launching pad, not just a place to hunker down."

In that respect, you'd probably want to avoid Fremont, Fontana and Moreno Valley. Those cities have the lowest number of singles or have the fewest nightlife options. It's no wonder they rank toward the bottom of the list.

Here are the top 10 cities for singles, according to WalletHub:

  1. San Francisco, CA
  2. Orlando, FL
  3. Seattle, WA
  4. San Diego, CA
  5. Boston, MA
  6. Austin, TX
  7. Las Vegas, NV
  8. Phoenix, AZ
  9. Miami, FL
  10. Los Angeles, CA
