📰 News we're reading

1. BHPD Takes Extra Steps to Ensure Traffic Safety on Eve of the Holidays (beverlyhillscourier.com) — Beverly Hills police recently led a multi-agency traffic crackdown that issued 75 citations in one evening, targeting distracted driving, red-light running, and loud engines across the city. Officials say the operation, supported by a new push to measure excessive engine noise, aims to answer resident complaints and improve safety on busy streets like Wilshire Boulevard during the holiday rush.

2. Pioneer Hardware Signals Proposed Rent Increases Could Force Closure (beverlyhillscourier.com) — A proposed city rent increase could force century-old Pioneer Hardware, in a Beverly Hills–owned building on Crescent Drive, to close at the end of 2026. The owner and longtime customers say the store is a vital neighborhood resource, while the city argues the higher rent and nearby bathroom installation are reasonable steps that still undercut market rates.

3. Sainthood effort begins for Mother Antonia Brenner, the nun who chose to bring Gospel behind bars (thedialog.org) — A former Beverly Hills resident who left a comfortable life to serve prisoners in Tijuana is now being considered for sainthood. Mother Antonia Brenner spent decades living inside La Mesa Penitentiary, founding a community of older women religious and providing spiritual and practical support to inmates, guards, and vulnerable people on both sides of the prison walls.

4. Why Is it So Hard to Build Big Things? (nytimes.com) — A national newsletter on America’s building woes briefly zooms into Beverly Hills, where a state “builder’s remedy” law is pressuring the city to accept high‑density housing it might otherwise resist. The piece frames Beverly Hills as an example of how local opposition, red tape, and political gridlock complicate big projects, from housing to highways and chip plants nationwide.
