BHHS Wrestling Recap

The Normans wrestling squad finished third in the Pioneer League and sent one wrestler to the Masters Meet.

It was a solid season for wrestling, which took third place in the Pioneer League behind the leadership of captains Dylan Lojac, Ralph Yun, Matt Kohanbash and Marshall Stevens.

"Each of these wrestlers gave all they had for the team and led our team in every dual tournament with big wins against opponents. They were especially strong in victories against league rivals South Torrance and Santa Monica," head coach Mark Mead said. "This was the first time in over 30 years that BHHS has won two league duals. With those four leaders, we were able to get our first third place finish in the Pioneer League. We also had three league champs for the first time."

Beverly Hills finished with an overall record of 17-5. Compared to last season when six BHHS wrestlers made it to the CIF Individuals tournament, this time around the team sent eight Normans:

  • Matt Kohanbash, 121-pound weight class (3rd in Pioneer League)
  • Dylan Lojac, 154-pound weight class (1st in Pioneer League)
  • Ralph Yun, 162-pound weight class (2nd in Pioneer League)
  • Nick Sands, 172-pound weight class (3rd in Pioneer League)
  • Bram Geiderman, 184-pound weight class (3rd in Pioneer League)
  • Marshall Stevens, 197-pound weigh class (1st in Pioneer League)
  • Axel Pinotti, 222-pound weight class (3rd in Pioneer League)
  • Julian Jackson, Heavyweight (1st in Pioneer League)

Lojac was the lone BHHS wrestler to advance to the Masters Meet, which takes the top five finishers in each weight bracket from the CIF Individuals tournament.

"Dylan wrestled hard and lost a heart-breaker in the last seconds of the third period. He lost 7-5," Mead said of Lojac's performance at Masters. "The second match Dylan lost to a state qualifier. Dylan wrestled hard and I'm proud of him."

The top nine wrestlers in each weight class at the Masters Meet advanced to the CIF State Tournament held this past weekend in Bakersfield.
