Theft Arrests On Brass Valves, Campbell Police Say

The alleged stealing of "backflow valves" occurred in the Campbell Technology Parkway business complex. The estimated loss is $14,000.

CAMPBELL, CA -- Police have arrested three men in connection with an alleged theft of backflow valves, connection devices that deter contaminants from being released into a main drinking water system.

Capt. Gary Berg indicated thieves take the devices for the value of the brass and resell them for half the price to recycling facilities. Officers located the suspects through a patrol check, and it was determined six valves valued at $14,000 were taken between Aug. 29 and Sept. 4.

San Jose suspects Tony Alvarez, 54, John Fung, 52, and Kelly Mack, 49, were booked into Santa Clara County Jail. Fung was taken into custody on attempted grand theft, conspiracy, burglary and drug charges. Alvarez faced those charges, along with a probation violation. Mack also was booked on those charges in addition to presenting false identification to a police officer.

The Campbell Police Department recommends averting this crime by painting a valve to decrease its value, place in a protective cage, post warnings, consider using a plastic coating or disguise the device within the environment.
