The U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development has awarded the City of Carlsbad a “Certificate of Excellence” for the Carlsbad housing agency’s exemplary management of a program that assists very low-income renters.
The HUD Los Angeles Office of Public Housing gave the award to the City of Carlsbad Department of Housing & Neighborhood Services for achieving the prestigious designation of “high performer” for its Section Eight Management Assessment Program. “This is our fifth consecutive year receiving the high performer designation,” said Carlsbad Housing Program Manager Bobbi Nunn.
“We're ranked on 14 key indicators. Our success is a direct result of the dedication of our case managers and their accurate case management.” The “high performer” rating is the highest honor that the federal government can give a housing agency.
The federal Section Eight Rental Assistance Program helps very low-income households by paying a portion of their monthly rent, and the Section Eight Management Assessment Program measures how well a public housing agency administers its program.
The Carlsbad Housing Agency manages $5.8 million in federal funds, which assists 600 very low-income families. The agency must check on clients annually to verify that they continue to qualify for the program, and must also inspect clients’ residences at least once a year. The agency must also conduct periodic audits of its records and inspections to make sure that its practices are sound.
