Photo Gallery: Carlsbad 5th Graders Compete in Mini March Madness

Mini March Madness games are meant to promote health, fitness, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

Mini March Madness is a collaborative effort between the CUSD and the City of Carlsbad Recreation Department.

The games took place Thursday afternoon at Poinsettia Elementary.

"The reason we target 5th grades is because we know all of these students will end up at one of the three middle schools in Carlsbad and this is a way to bring all of the elementary schools together," explained CUSD's Student Services Specialist Rosemary Eshelman.

Fifth-grade girls and boys teams from all nine elementary schools competed, cheered on by fellow students, siblings, parents, aunts and uncles and grandparents galore.

At the end of the exciting tournament, Magnolia girls reigned supreme. Pacific Rim boys, after an intense six overtimes with their Jefferson counterparts, captured an incredible five-peat trophy.
